Innovation Abounds, Great Thanksgiving Listen and Turkey Trivia - November 19, 2017

At Lower School, First Grade Math teachers, Larissa Weaver and Cindy Proctor, designed a very engaging “unplugged” LID activity that included many skills (place value, odd and even numbers, subtraction, addition, budgeting, ordering numbers from greatest to least, creativity). The pictures show some of the directions for the activity as well as the final products that were displayed in class. What isn’t shown in the pictures is that teachers excused students to pick up their building supplies by calling out specific place values (if your house number has a four in the thousands place, then come up to get your supplies). They also had the students line up their houses in order of greatest to least.

At Middle School, you can see a snapshot of some of the 3D printed rings from Lisa Masoni and Chris Caruso's Latin 1a classes. They made signet rings on TinkerCAD and then wrote letters of "thanks" which were then sealed with wax imprints from their unique ring imprints.

At at the Upper School, Students in Diane Main’s Digital World class are putting together PIPER computers, which are small Raspberry Pi-based wooden computers they build from parts and then play a Minecraft story game on the machines. The game teaches them how to add components and functions to the PIPER while they play on it. There’s a lot of teamwork and problem solving involved before they even get to press the power button, and we are spreading this out over several sessions of class.

I have personally been using StoryCorps for almost 10 years, and the last year I was in an English classroom, I used it heavily with my students to investigate, learn to listen (and really hear) and ultimately, build their empathetic muscles.

What's even better is that StoryCorps also offers an entire kit for all educators, in case you want to use this with your students. But you can just do this in your family, with friends, or with one other person.
